We had the privilege of visiting Shopee, Southeast Asia’s leading e-commerce platform, where we gained valuable insights into its' operations, data-driven strategies, and dynamic workplace culture. The session featured sharings from Wenxin (Regional Employer Branding and Internal Communications), Brenda (Data Analyst, Regional Operations - Logistics), Joel (Business Intelligence - Singapore), and Eugenia (Shopee Commercial Recruiting Team), each offering perspectives on Shopee’s ecosystem, logistics, business intelligence, and recruitment processes.
Wenxin: Bringing People and Businesses Together with Our Ecosystem
Wenxin introduced Shopee’s business model and its largest market, Indonesia. She highlighted Shopee’s four unique selling points, which drive its success:
Hyper-localisation: Shopee tailors its approach to the diverse needs of local markets.
Digital Inclusion: It provides underserved communities access to the digital economy.
User-Centricity: Shopee prioritises customer experience in all its services.
Digital Skills Development: The company fosters learning opportunities for employees, sellers, and partners.
Shopee’s achievements, including being listed among Asia’s Top 50 Brands under Campaign 360, were also shared. The session was interactive, with a Kahoot quiz testing our knowledge of Shopee’s operations and brand identity.
Brenda: Optimising Logistics through Data Analytics
Brenda, a Data Analyst in Regional Operations (Logistics), provided insights into Shopee’s supply chain and logistics network. Her role focuses on strategy and planning, including network optimisation, cost-benefit analysis, and operational improvements. One of her past projects involved determining optimal facility locations to balance speed and cost in Shopee’s sorting centres. She explained key logistics considerations, such as travel time, customs clearance, and facility costs, demonstrating how Shopee enhances delivery efficiency.
Joel: Empowering Business Decisions with Data
Joel, from Shopee’s Business Intelligence (BI) team, described how BI supports various departments, including Business Development, Seller Operations, and Logistics. His team enables data-driven decision-making through forecasting models, competitor price analysis, and logistics simulations. He shared a recent project on SPX locker simulations, aimed at optimizing delivery solutions. Joel emphasized the importance of SQL proficiency, as his role heavily involves processing large datasets. He finds satisfaction in transforming raw data into actionable insights that help Shopee refine its operations. He also highlighted how the BI team collaborates closely with engineering and operations to ensure that the data-driven solutions they propose are both actionable and scalable.
Eugenia: Navigating Careers at Shopee
Eugenia from Shopee’s Commercial Recruiting Team provided an overview of Shopee’s recruitment process, which includes HR interviews, technical assessments, and hiring manager evaluations. She outlined key attributes Shopee looks for in candidates:
Culture Fit: Adaptability, motivation, and passion for e-commerce.
Soft Skills: Problem-solving, teamwork, and communication.
Technical Skills: Role-specific expertise, such as proficiency in SQL, Python, or data analysis.
She also shared practical application tips, including tailoring resumes to job descriptions, using the STAR framework for interviews, and networking with Shopee employees. She advised first-year students interested in technical roles to apply, as Shopee does not expect candidates at that stage to have extensive prior experience but rather to possess the critical thinking skills and a clear idea of the goals they aim to achieve throughout the internship. Eugenia emphasized that proactiveness and curiosity are key traits that can help candidates stand out for possible conversion of internships.
