Marketing Internal Networking and Sharing Session RECAP 2022

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

In a digitally evolving world with constant fluxes in the needs and wants of customers, how do marketers strategize to achieve a greater outreach and determine the success of a marketing campaign? How does one overcome the various hurdles that arise? To address these queries, the Business Career Development Committee (BizCare) invited Deputy Head of Department (Marketing) at the National University of Singapore, Professor Ang Swee Hoon, and diligent Year 4 students pursuing marketing, Sonia Chek, Teddi Bestian, Esther Soh, and Jasmine Tan for the Marketing Internal Networking Sharing Session on 29 September 2022.

Professor Ang has over 10 years of experience in the education industry, providing guidance to students that seek advice and nurturing their marketing expertise and talents through a series of specially curated curriculums. The four student speakers invited have explored their interests through related clubs and internship opportunities, and positively contributed at their interning companies and expanding their industry-relevant skill sets, taking away valuable insights that can be applied into their individual future career prospects.

Professor Ang highlighted the stigma that shrouds marketing for being too “fluff”. She candidly shared that the need to have a strong foundation not only in concepts, but also in application of those learnt concepts in order to strategize and propose competent solutions to tackle challenges, is another obstacle and marketers face. Students often have a narrow understanding of what marketing as a specialization usually encompasses, such as the emphasis on heavy market research, and analysis of collected data on software to better understand and predict consumer trends.

Esther and Teddi shared their initial concerns when considering to specialize in marketing and the various measures they took to overcome their limitations and stand out in the eyes of recruiters. A common consensus amongst the speakers was that they strongly recommended students to actively partake in numerous case competitions and mentorship programmes to develop a deeper understanding of the current market demands and how the industry is leveraging on the advancements in new technology as it becomes a routine part of our lives. Jasmine emphasized the significance of staying relevant with industrial expectations, which can be done through various online media and news channels, to gain a competitive edge over others in the market and further diversify your portfolio.

Post-panel opinions from students

“The talk was very insightful, where the speakers shared their own unique concerns, they had when choosing to specialise in this field and the various measures they took in order to stand out from their peers and allowed them to excel. The promotion of club involvement and advice to join numerous case competitions to understand first hand industrial expectations during the Q&A session was something that I can really take away from this sharing and consider if I want to further my horizons and make my mark effectively when exploring potential internship and job opportunities.” ~Rishav Chakraverty, Y2 BBA
