Human emotions are complex and an amalgam of these aspects with numerous individuals involved in the daily administration in an organization, each with their own personalities and ideals, has become an exceedingly important task for most business leaders to understand and satisfy. The Business Career Development Committee (BizCare) invited Head of Department, Professor Kai Chi Sam and meticulous students, Victoria Lee, Sebastian Phang, and Victoria Ang, who are all pursuing a related specialization in the field in their final year of their degree, to elaborate and expand on the various skill sets and approaches that interested students should undertake in order to further pursue your interests in this industry.
A career in this field requires an in-depth understanding of the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations that can drive employees towards achieving set tasks and be aligned with the company's mission and vision values.
Victoria Lee highlighted the importance of honing one’s people-oriented and analytical skills to be able to offer solutions that would cater to the employees’ wants and overall, stay likable and easy to approach. Sebastian described the mentality with which a student decides to pursue this field is one of the most crucial factors in determining a student's success in this industry. A strong passion and constant involvement in related school committees, events such as case competitions and lectures will help bolster strong fundamentals and skill sets that will aid in the working world.
A similar point brought up by all 3 student speakers was the need to hone on your soft skills through internship opportunities and understanding the different approaches towards satisfying the needs and wants of your employees without having to compromise greatly and ensure that business operations continue smoothly.
A misconception cleared by Victoria Ang was that most students believe that Marketing is a closely related specialization that will add value drastically if chosen as a second choice. However, this stigma was debunked as she shared that while there are a few transferable skills, it does not have a significant impact on the type of tasks handled when performing HR related tasks. One of the more growing fields that students were encouraged to pursue as a second specialization was Business Analytics as there are niche fields that can be explored by students which will really value-add as an employee in a competitive company.
Post-panel opinions from students
“My initial stigma was that HR tasks usually just involve making PPT slides and talking to people and leaving them on hold before they ping you again regarding their problems. After the panel today , I grasped a greater awareness on the need to meet the needs and wants of employees without compromising too much as to exhaust the resources within an organization, get everyone aligned with the vision and mission values of the company and achieve greater results collectively.” ~Rishav Chakraverty, Y2 BBA
